Can an initial public offering from Facebook reverse the Wall Street curse on social media companies? Facebook could file to go public as soon as tomorrow, and its offering could raise up to $10 billion — enough to revive a tepid market for Internet stocks, analysts said, and seed the ground for future offerings from social media companies like Twitter or Yelp Inc.
Facebook’s market value may reach $100 billion, placing the social media giant on par with such corporate titans as General Motors Co. and Visa Inc.Initial public offerings from social media companies have been underwhelming. The daily deal site Groupon Inc., professional networking service LinkedIn Corp., and online game maker Zynga Inc. all went public in 2011 to great hoopla, but with disappointing results. Groupon has been trading barely above its $20 opening price, and shares in Zynga, which raised $1 billion when it went public in December, only recently fetched more than their $10 debut price.
LinkedIn soared after its market debut in May, doubling in price on its first day of trading, but investors have since cooled on the company’s stock.

Back in March, Greenpeace and Nestle had a little disagreement over Kit Kat bars, palm oil, and orangutans. The anti-Nestle campaign spilled onto Nestle’s Facebook page, overwhelming the company’s Social Media team. The incident prompted two posts – one outlining the crisis itself, and the other (this one) listing ways to deal with coordinated attacks on your brand via Social Media channels, particularly Facebook. In case you missed it, here it is again:
* * *
Today, we’re going to look at ways that this Social Media management disaster (and PR black eye) could have been handled by Nestle, had their Social Media team (internal or outsourced) been prepared for that kind of crisis. We already covered some of the major points of how to avoid this yesterday (hiring professionals to manage your Social Media outlets, planning for crises, training in crisis management and real-time PR, etc.), so – for the purposes of today’s post – let’s assume that Part 1?s advice was taken to heart and that trained, experienced professionals are now in charge of all of the company’s Social Media properties, including Facebook.

There is no question that President Obama last night rose to the occasion and delivered a urgently needed inspirational speech. At times combative, self deprecating and inspirational, the speech was exactly the right tone for the moment. His focus on jobs and more jobs was what the American people desperately wanted to and needed to hear. The Presidents commitment to stay with healthcare was a defining moment. Proclaiming that every day should’nt be election day was powerful. However, as my mother used to say when people made wide promises, “We'll see, the proof will be in the pudding”. We have seen Obama rise on many occasions to deliver the speechwhen needed. Whether it was the speech on Reverend Wright and race or the speech at the Iowa Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner which began his ascent to the Presidency, Obama has always delivered the words when in trouble. The problem is that the magic is starting to wear off and we are waiting for hardcore action than mere words. I believe he wants to do the right thing. The problem is that with his record over the last year we have to question if he has the leadership and understanding of power to do the right thing. The reference to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in a State of the Union message was no doubt a powerful and historic moment for the LGBT community. The community has succeeded in pushing this rock up the hill so that at last DADT is part of the national agenda. What I dont understand is why the President continues to resist issuing a stop-loss order and end this practice now instead of a prolong and maybe never ending Congressional battle? What a moral high ground he would have spoken from last night if he announced a stop-loss order and then challenge Congress to meet his courage. The President has the power right this moment, beyond inspiration words, to create powerful change for this community. He once again decided not to use his Presidential powers and depend totally on Congress. The President left me hopeful last night but guarded. lyndale animal hospital . Clearly it has been proven over the last year that this administration does respond to pressure. So, most importantly, let's not waste any time with moving words but do our job and keep the pressure on this President and this Congress to do the job for which they were elected. The time for words has passed and there is an urgent need for real action before the election in November. animal care hospital . via DavidMixner.com – Live From Hell’s Kitchen.
